Lake Mary Homeowners Association
The Lake Mary Homeowners Association was originally organized in 1987 in an effort to improve the water quality of Lake Mary and to protect the lake as a natural resource. Lake Mary is located a few miles southeast of Howard Lake and is a spring-fed lake. It is approximately 180 acres in size and is 47 feet at its deepest point.
The board meets quarterly at one of the officer’s homes. The board can be contacted through its 2005 chairman Mike Ollig at 10932 Grunwald Ave. SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349 or by calling (320) 485-4242.
The board organizes an annual meeting and potluck picnic each year. It also has an annual (ice out, date guessing) contest. Raffle tickets are sold to finance a walleye stocking program. Stocking of walleye has been done bi-annually since 1999.
The Lake Mary Homeowners Association has also worked with the Wright County Soil and Conservation District on the installation of five agricultural French drains in 1998, which replaced five open field inlets. These French drains allow for filtering of run-off water before entering Lake Mary.
In addition, our association, in 2004, has gone into a five-year (joint venture) program with the Wright County Soil and Water Department and a local area land owner. One acre of farmland has been set aside as a buffer zone and planted with native grasses to help remove sediment, phosphates, and chemicals before they enter the lake.
The Department of Natural Resources monitors wildlife health of Lake Mary through yearly visits. Our volunteers submit water samples to the Wright County Soil and Water agency monthly during the spring, summer, and fall for testing. We also take water clarity tests for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
A newsletter, stressing communication, community interaction, and articles of interest, is sent out quarterly as one of the benefits of membership.
Past accomplishments include annual surveys of its members, setting up a neighborhood watch program sponsored by the Wright County Sheriff's Department, septic tank maintenance information distribution, as well as encouragement of the use of zero phosphate content fertilizers.
Membership dues are $15 per year for homeowners. Associate members are also welcome to join. Our association's goal is to improve water quality and the quality of life in the Lake Mary community area.
HLWW High School After Prom Party
The HLWW After Prom Party organization was formed in the fall of 1988 to provide a safe form of entertainment for Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School juniors and seniors and their dates on prom night. The first after-prom party was in 1989, and has seen a steady increase in attendance every year since then. The students enjoy an all night party with food, fun, wonderful prizes, and entertainment.
This is a volunteer group that hosts many annual fundraisers which include a pancake breakfast during Good Neighbor Days, bake sales at the Howard Lake annual craft and art expo in November, and the Business Expo in the spring, a concession stand at home football games, and an annual fall garage sale.
We welcome anyone who is interested in helping. Watch the Herald Journal newspaper meetings column for upcoming meetings and times. Meetings take place in the commons area at the HLWW High School.
Lake Ann Improvement Association
The Lake Ann Improvement Association was originally incorporated in 1984 and has newly incorporated and reorganized with new by-laws and board members in 2003. The objectives of the association are to protect, restore, and preserve the water quality of the lake and its watershed, thereby enhancing the community in which residents live. Lake Ann is located between Howard Lake and Winsted, off of Wright County Road 6. There are 47 property owners who own land surrounding the lakeshore.
For many years, concerned residents have put forth efforts to protect the quality of the waters and the fishery. The original association made much progress in organizing efforts to establish a public landing, stock the lake with walleye, and bring the lake community together. In 1996, the association participated in the MPCA sponsored Lake Assessment Program (LAP). This reset the tone for the association’s focus concerning lake management activities.
As part of the LAP study, the association has worked to get its septic systems around the lake in compliance and have been successful. Since 1996, the association has continued to monitor precipitation records and DNR lake levels and report them to the state. Since 1999, it has done water clarity measurements on water from the ditch that enters the lake. The board has been very active in the Shoreland Volunteer Program.
Annually, the association hosts spring meetings and a fall picnic along with other special events to keep the community together and educated on the activities and goals of the association. The association has established a buffer program with the assistance of the Wright County Soil & Water Conservation District, and to-date, the association has established just more than 32 acres of buffer in the watershed and our lake association has committed just more than $4,000 over five years.
Additionally, the association has cooperated with the farmers and with the SWCD to install various French drains and other diversions to minimize runoff into the streams and lakes. These activities helped earn the association the award as Outstanding Wright County Conservation Cooperator of the Year from the Minnesota Association of SWCD in 2000. The Lake Ann Improvement Association has also been an initiator in developing the Wright County Lakes Monitoring Program, now in action for its second year.
Association membership is available to anyone interested by paying annual dues of $35. For more information, contact Debbie Stenberg (320) 543-2440.

Howard Lake Watershed Alliance
The Lake Association of Howard Lake was quite active through the early 1900s. In 2000, it was re-organized and in 2003, new board members were elected.
New by-laws and incorporation under a new name of the Howard Lake Watershed Alliance took place in 2004. The name was changed to reflect a community approach to the water quality management of Howard Lake.
The objective of the alliance is to provide educational resources for activities and tasks and to organize and implement activities and tasks that will help protect, maintain and enhance environmental, recreational, fishing and wildlife interests pertaining to Howard Lake and the Howard Lake watershed.
The original association was concerned with water quality in Howard Lake. However, with the acceptance into a joint study venture with Wright County and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the watershed alliance has focused on total lake management activities since 2002. Our efforts were rewarded in 2003, with a grant from the Initiative Foundation. As part of this grant, a community-wide vision session was conducted. This session led to three main concerns of water quality, aquatic vegetation management, and shoreline use and development. Board and volunteer efforts have focused on these main initiatives.
The above goals are being met by a strong body of volunteers and developing relationships with civic groups and the local newspaper and sportsmen’s club. These relationships have allowed us to provide educational material to the community through public access cable TV and news articles.
The lake has been monitored since 2000 for trends in clarity and nutrient loading. In 2003, a program to control nuisance aquatic vegetation was initiated. In 2005, we were able to elicit help from a local youth group “stuffing” barley straw into bags that were then used in several area lakes and ponds in an effort to improve water quality.
The board meets quarterly and sponsors the annual meeting and picnic in conjunction with the City of Howard Lake’s Good Neighbor Days. A newsletter is published two times a year. The board can be contacted with general concerns and membership information by contacting Curt Forst at (320) 543-3736.
